![]() G E O R G E L O N G Artist, painter, musician, George Long was born in 1953 and spent his formative years growing up in Bromley, England. Coming from a family of artists and musicians, he began painting at the age of eleven. In 1968, he and his family emmigrated to Vancouver, British Columbia, where he studied photography and Japanese brush painting. Having become an accomplished award-winning photographer and pushed photography to its limits, Long began painting again in 1978 when he moved to San Francisco. His study of jazz saxophone and musical theories at that time greatly influenced his colorful rhythmical abstract paintings. In 1983, he travelled to Florence and Paris, returning to San Francisco in 1985. Drawing inspiration from American and German expressionists, Long incorporates spontaneous abstract brush strokes with more suggestive human and natural forms and figures. Thus, the viewer is transported from the familiar into the unknown. His paintings express the free and rebellious spirit of art in its purity. George Long lives in North Beach/San Francisco and works in his artist space at 939 Pacific Avenue. He can be reached at (415) 395-0903.
